Styles and Document Formatting in Word – what are these options and how can I use them in my documents
This week’s hint and tip is on Styles and Document Formatting in Word. These options are available to use in Word to alter the appearance of your documents. Together these options aren’t covered necessarily in our courses so we decided to do a hint and tip on it. We are going to go through it now below.
Styles
Styles are a feature in Word that allow you to change how text looks using predesigned style options set up by Word. You can manually do this for appearance, but using the Styles options can save time and also can be used in conjunction with other formatting features. Some of the options available can be seen below.

Design Tab and Document Formatting
The Design Tab in Word has lots of options available on it for formatting your documents. A big section of the ribbon on this tab is called document formatting. This allows you to choose the general format you would like your document to follow based on some predesigned options created by Word. Alongside the gallery of options, you can specify colours, fonts and other formatting to be applied to these.

Using Styles alongside the Document Formatting option
To use the document formatting option, you first need to apply different styles to your document. This can be done by using the Styles gallery found on the Home Tab. The document below has had a few styles applied to it.

Once you have applied them, you can then go to the Design Tab and choose a document formatting type from the gallery. As you hover over each option, you will be able to see a live preview of how each option will change the documents appearance.

Each option will have a design for each style that could be used. Some of the designs can alter your documents appearance more than others. Once you have chosen the design you like, clicking on it will then apply that formatting to your document and the text in it. Below is now what the document shown above looks like with the design chosen applied to it.

The video below shows you what styles and document formatting in Word is and an example of how they can be used. There are many formatting options available for use in your Word documents to help improve the function and appearance.
