The Review Tab in Word – a selection of features that can be used in your documents
This week’s hint and tip is on the Review tab in Word. This tab has a selection of features that you can use to review and check your documents. We cover some of these features on our Intermediate Word course but decided to also do a hint and tip on them. We are going to go through it now below.
The Review Tab
The Review Tab has many features on it for reviewing and checking your document. These can all be seen below.

We are now going to go through just a few in more detail below.
Proofing Section
This section is one that most will have used to an extent but maybe not directly from the Review Tab. This section is often used mainly for the spelling and grammar part but there are other options in it too.
Spelling and Grammar gives you the option to check just the spelling or both the spelling and grammar. You can choose which option by clicking on the downwards arrow. This goes through your document and checks for any mistakes.
Editor has been around for a while now but can sometimes be overlooked. This is often due to people just go to the Spelling and Grammar checks as that is what they’ve always used. There is also a selection of refinement options (e.g. conciseness and formality) that you can utilise.
Thesaurus allows you to select a word in your document and then gives suggestions of other ways in which you could say that word.
Word Count gives a statistics summary of the document telling you the words, paragraphs, characters etc. in your document. If you just select part of the document then it will only tell you the statistics for the part you selected.
Read Aloud
The Read Aloud feature gives you the option to have your document read out to you. You click where you want it to be read from and then click on the option on the ribbon. It will then start reading your document for you. There are some simple settings that you can change (the speed it is read at and the voice). You can also skip forwards or backwards in your document by clicking the arrow options on the toolbar that comes up.
Language Section
This part of the Review tab looks at language options you can set. The first is Translate which gives you the opportunity to translate part or all of your Word document into another language. It will often detect the language of the text that you have selected, but it is always worth double checking that it has got that correct.
The other option is Language. This allows you to set the proofing language of the document. You can set it just for the one document you are in or you can set the default proofing language so that it will use this for all of your documents.
The video below goes through some of the features found on the Review Tab in Word. These options and features can be used to check over your document to make sure any changes or mistakes can be made before printing or sending it on to someone.
Take a look below at the video to find out more and then try it out on your own computer!
