Microsoft Office Specialist – looking at 3D Maps in Excel, have you used them?

Here at JPL we continually strive to improve the variety of Microsoft Office courses in the Midlands and further afield.

We thought you may like to see a short video of the towns we’ve trained clients in during the last 12 months. It’s only 10 seconds and was created using a new feature in Excel called 3D maps. You may spot your town but if not let us know!

Although we train in a variety of modules in Microsoft office like Word, PowerPoint and Access we’ve found the major demand for our training courses is in Excel. Of which we have now developed 5 levels of courses.

We often publish hints and tips at least once a month and here’s our tip of the day – a really simple one to do with worksheets but then as the saying goes “the simpler the better”.

Tip of the Day in Excel

Four things you may not know about Excel worksheets:

To colour a worksheet simply right click and choose a Tab colour

To move a worksheet to a different position simply drag and drop the sheet to the left or right

To rename a worksheet its quicker to double click on it and then type over the worksheet name

When using a worksheet in a formula where a sheet has an embedded space in it use an apostrophe e.g. =sum(‘jan 18:mar 18’!b2)

Why not take a look at our previous post on new features in PowerPoint?

We’ve developed ourselves into a Microsoft Office specialist and pride ourselves on the commitment to interest trainees on courses to enjoy their experience of being trained by us.

We are grateful for your support over the years and please keep an eye on our hints and tips page. These cover all kinds of Microsoft Office modules and you can find them here.

If you have any comments on the hints and tips or any news we post, please let us know on johnlegge@jplcomputer.co.uk.

Microsoft training experts – JPL are ready to deliver quality, supportive training to help your business.

At JPL we understand the importance of training your staff, and as Microsoft training experts we are here to help. With our knowledge gathered from the past decade working with an array of different clients, we have the expertise to deal with whatever problem you may be experiencing.

It is all too easy to invest money in good quality computers but fail to invest in training your staff to use them efficiently. Sometimes employees have been trained on computers many years before so their methods may be outdated and inefficient. Others may be reluctant to use newer systems feeling concerned by their lack of skill. By using Microsoft training experts you can overcome these obstacles.

At JPL we are Microsoft training experts so we understand these problems. We bring supportive training to your staff, enabling them to learn. We are never critical and we are always sensitive to the levels of learning required and make sure that we pitch the training correctly. From warehouse staff to complex high-end operating systems, at JPL we can deliver the training that you need for your business.

We recently delivered training for the warehouse staff at Jaga, who are based in Ledbury, Herefordshire. Founded in Belgium in 1962 Jaga established in the UK 15 years ago. Jaga have always led the way in the design of high-performance heating products and manufactures a wide range of energy-efficient heating and ventilation solutions. We designed a program to work around their business. We spilt the study into easy to manage 2/3 hours sections and covered a different topic in each session: PC introduction, Word and Excel and internet and email. The feedback we received was very positive, “John and Rachel developed some customised training to meet a particular need (computer awareness). I was impressed with the service we received from start to finish, the training met our needs and we had extremely positive feedback from the delegates, in particular about the trainers’ style and delivery.” Joyce, HR Manager.

As Microsoft training experts, we are passionate about delivering the training that you require. In our work with Jaga we designed the program to fit around the ongoing work requirements of the staff. We appreciate that you cannot stop your warehouse staff for a whole day to train them. We also understand that shorter blocks of training mean that concentration is maintained, thereby ensuring that everyone gains the most out of the session, and as a business owner you gain excellent value for money.

To discuss any computer training including Microsoft Office Training or any other challenges that you may be having, please contact us. We are always happy to have an informal, no obligation discussion about your requirements, and will do our utmost to resolve any issues that you are experiencing.

Word training Leicestershire – do you know the difference between what package to use for what?

For years Word was the number one software package that everybody used, a standard for anyone in business to compose a letter, fax or documented procedure. It was used as the template for invoices, despatch notes and quotations. With the growing interest in Outlook for emailing and Excel not just for calculations but for forms also, Word has lost some of its importance in the business marketplace.

Some where does Word still fit in inside the working environment and where can Outlook take precedence? Here is a simple table showing where perhaps each is best suited, along with techniques in each.

What do you think? Do you think that the boundaries between these three Microsoft Office packages have become blurred in their use in businesses over recent years? Have you blurred your use of them? Let us know what you think!

To find out more about any of these and more functions please visit our website for details of courses we can run. If you have any queries about our courses, Word training Leicestershire or any other county and package, you can use our contact page on the website to send us your query. Otherwise you can email us on johnlegge@jplcomputer.co.uk or give us a call on 07903 840105.

Computer Services Worcestershire – 20 Years in Business!

Computer Services Worcestershire – JPL, together with AIM Internet, celebrate being in business for 20 years!

Last week, we enjoyed a celebration with a lovely group of people at Red Hill Christian Retreat centre, with friends and customers being able to join us in celebrating as well as some faces who have been there supporting us all the way back when John first decided to start up JPL, computer services Worcestershire. When John first started up the business, he didn’t really know where it would take him and 20 years later the business has developed and changed as computing has changed and continues to thrive!

We all had a lovely time catching up with people and hearing stories and memories that people have of us from over the years and it was a really nice way to celebrate our big achievement with those who joined us. There was lots of laughter and tears of joy were shared over stories and overall we all had a really lovely day celebrating such an achievement for us.

So from everyone here, thank you to all who have wished us congratulations in reaching this milestone, we really appreciate it and are grateful for all the support that we have received from you all over the years.

It has been great to get to know so many people over the years and build up relationships with our customers and we continue to look forward to developing those friendships over the next years.

From all the team,

John, Dianne and Rachel

Excel Training Gloucestershire

We are particularly active in Gloucestershire offering on site Excel training. Here at JPL we can offer a range of standard Excel courses ranging from Basic to Master Class and all content can be found on our website. We have also recently developed another Master Class Excel course – there used to be just a Master Class Excel Bronze, but now there is also Master Class Excel Silver!

Excel is a package that is often seen as a basic requirement for a lot of people nowadays when they are applying for a job. Excel is ever increasingly becoming a package that businesses use for storing and analysing data for a number of departments within the company. With the use of Excel becoming more important and integrated within a companies daily work it is becoming ever more important for your knowledge of Excel to be kept up to scratch!

A lot of people would probably class themselves as ‘self taught’, that they have picked up their skills and knowledge in Excel through ‘trial and error’ or by someone mentioning how to do something in passing. This often will get you by unless you need to do something a bit harder or if something goes wrong and you need to fix it!

This is where we come in, we have a number of Excel training courses that we run which you can take a look at details of here. We also offer training in other MS Office courses in Word, Access, Outlook, Project and PowerPoint. You can find details for these here on our website.

For more details of the Excel training Gloucestershire that we offer please contact us on 07903 840105 or feel free email us on johnlegge@jplcomputer.co.uk

Worksheet Hint and Tip – Renaming Worksheets

To finish on we thought we would include a little worksheet hint and tip, you can view more hints and tips on our main Hints and Tips page.

In Excel you can rename the worksheet you are working in. By default the name will be Sheet1, Sheet2, etc. These aren’t very informative and so you can rename them to make more sense!

To rename the worksheet, you can either:

Microsoft Courses – Five things you may not have used in Microsoft Word before!

Word is a useful Microsoft Office package and there are lots of areas to learn something new within it. Here are five things you might not have known about previously:

A tick bullet point. A tick bullet point is now an option under the bullet points button. However, it didn’t always used to be! If the option to have a tick as a bullet point isn’t available to you follow these steps to do it. To create a bullet tick change font to Windings 2 and then do a Shift P – hey presto a tick!

Autotext. To save you time use Autotext. File, options, Proofing, Auto correct options and choose to replace a phrase with a short acronym. E.g. you can create fyi as autotext to show ‘for your information’

Quick parts. A Quick part is used for block text or graphics like your address with a logo. To use this option, type out the information you want as a quick part, highlight it and then go to Insert Tab and Quick Parts option and select the option to save to quick part gallery. It will then be there for you to insert at a later date.

Styles. There are many Styles that you can use within Word. Look at the Style area on the Home Tab. Try typing your name in to a document, highlight it and then change to Heading 1 by selecting it. You can see what the style will look like on the text that you have selected by hovering your mouse over the style before

Compare documents. A really useful feature in the Review Tab in word 2010 is Compare which allows the comparing of original and revised documents showing the differences. A ‘cut down’ version of this is comparing text styles on the Reveal Formatting Pane.

Microsoft Office 2013 – similar to 2010 but with some added new features

When you first see Microsoft Office 2013 or indeed Office 365 (the on line version) you may think there is not much difference to Office 2010. Certainly the existing features are kept, the tabs and ribbons remain the same but new features are added particularly in Excel.

One new really good feature in Excel 2013 is called Quick Analysis. This button appears in the bottom right hand corner when you select a set of data and it allows you to easily do any of the following actions:

Conditionally format the data that you have just selected

Create a chart and easily add Chart elements, Styles and Filter your dataset

Add Sparklines to your data in the spreadsheet

Create Totals for the specific data that you have selected

Even though there are a lot of good new features in Excel, there are lots of new features within the other Microsoft Office packages.

One example is the Presenter view in PowerPoint. This view allows the presenter to see on part of their screen the slide that is up on the projector screen that the audience can see and then on the other part this presenter view which shows the next slide that will come up and any notes that have been assigned to the current slide.

Another example is the reading pane option within Word. This view is useful if your find reading word documents tiring as it makes the view more like that of a reading book. As well as this reading pane more, there is also an option to convert a PDF document in to a Word document to make editing it easier.
